Successful Composting

Research composting if you are contemplating using this natural mulch and fertilizer in your organic vegetable garden. A couple of things can be used to reach a result, the hot method and the cold method. If you are using the hot method, you could have matured humus that is ready to use in a few weeks. Using the cold method takes much longer and will most likely not be ready to use for about a year. Use basic things now to avoid problems later. First you need to locate an area away from your living space for your compost bin. It is also wise to construct this container on level ground. Once you have your container completed, you can begin adding materials. A good base of grass cuttings, small twigs, chopped up leaves or straw. It is called your base layer. All the mixture in the compost bin has been chopped up into small pieces, usually about the size of your thumb. Begin adding your other ingredients such as kitchen scraps or manure.

Always remember to add a layer of grass cuttings, leaves and such (brown food) over the top of the kitchen scraps (green or nitrogen rich food). You will want to have about twice as much brown food in your compost bin as green food. At this point, depending on how much humus you may need, you may want to go ahead and construct another bin to fill up while the first one is maturing. One will never run out of humus for your organic garden. When the first container if full begins filling the second bin. Turn the materials every day or so in order to get fresh air to all the ingredients and also to help control odors.  When the bin is full, add a layer of brown food to the top. Heat the mixture wants to leave your humus to cure or mature.Remember to stir or turn the humus every couple of days. It is also necessary to sift your humus before using it on your garden to make sure that any large pieces are removed.

Wild Rose Care

Wild roses are beautiful and slightly different from more domesticated varieties.  When you are thinking of growing these in your garden, you need to know a few things about where they grow naturally as well as how to care for them.  Most of them are single bloomers and will not vary too much in their coloration.  Most are pink, red, white, and some are even yellow.  These kinds of roses are hardy and versatile since they are supported on their root systems that have had no interference from man whatsoever.  They will also make it through harsh winters and return even more beautiful than before the next spring. They are easy growers and planted just like any other flower or plant you have in your garden area.

They need lots of sunlight and moist soil conditions. Space them properly because overcrowding can stunt their growth or even kill them over time.  Overcrowding also increases chances for disease and pests.  After planting, make sure they get lots of water and a little extra attention.  However, after these plants’ root systems have become established in their new home, they will need very little from you as a gardener. Little maintenance is involved such as removing deadheads and trimming the branches. Removing old blooms and unsightly parts of the plant will promote and encourage new growth and will make the plant over healthier and happier in the process.  These are beautiful for lining driveways or walkways, or you can even make this a show piece in your garden to impress your friends and family who come to visit.  Just make sure you when buy these that you have the time in the beginning to get these established in your garden so that they last for years and are beautiful.  Also, read up and research the particular variety you are choosing to plant in your garden and soil conditions.  Enjoy your wild roses!

Azaleas are a hardy flower able to thrive in a variety of climates, perfect for gardeners with temperamental temperatures. They come in a full spectrum of vibrant colors. The large size and tempting fragrance of rhododendron azaleas make them the bell of the ball, while the more modest Piedmont pink azaleas provide a delightful complement to showcase your more illustrious plants, or to line your driveways and fences with a splash of color.

How To Make A Garden Pond

Making A Pond Garden Building a pond garden may seem intimidating, but you can do it with some time and effort and preparation. Follow these steps to help go in the right direction. First you will need to section off with the location and size use some kind of indicating markers. You will want the pond to be anywhere from eighteen to twenty-four inches deep for fish and plants. It can be done by yourself by digging out the area. While you are digging, make sure the pond’s edges are level using a line level or yardstick. Check this about every foot or so. You will also need to add an overflow pipe in the direction of existing drainage to prevent overflow during heavy rains. Usually a one inch PVC pipe will do the trick. Remove any rocks, roots or other things from the walls of the area to prevent punctures in your plastic liner and to add a cushion, line the walls with sand, about an inch or so. Before adding the liner, let it sit in the sun for about thirty minutes to make the material more flexible. Center it over the cleaned out area and secure the corners. Begin to fill with water, smoothing out any spots while it is filling up. You should also use a black liner to help the pond look deeper and more tranquil. It is where you will complete your stonework and planting of surrounding flowers and plants. For more information, visit a local hardware store for more information. Also, when using water plants for a pond garden they will be very easy to position into the water when using this one great trick. They can be planted into small containers and weighted down with rocks and then plants can be added to containers and placed around in the water pond or water garden. It will hold them in place and they won't float to the top. It is a great way to make sure they get nutrients from the water to help them grow and become healthy plants to make a garden pop with brilliant colors.

Generally, gardening is very necessary nowadays apart from being just a hobby among some people. Emergence of high rise buildings has led to climatic changes and ecological imbalance hence making gardening plants a necessity since they help in maintaining the balance in the surrounding. There are various types of gardens depending on the type of plant featured. These include; wildflower garden, Rose garden, winter garden, shade garden, back garden, Mary garden, vegetable garden, cactus garden, bog garden, herb garden, flower garden and many others. It is worth noting that gardening can easily be done using any food containers as well as the left over oil cans to beautify your home. Containers made of mud are the best simply because they are porous hence allow better soil drainage. Ceramic containers for gardening plants are also good since they can retain water for a longer hence making the plant to require less watering and care. For healthy growing of gardening plants, there is need for sunlight and it is advisable for an amateur gardener to start planting gardening plants that are simple and easy to grow. You can also grow indoor gardening plants such as the money plant, peace lily, jade plant, ribbon grass, snake plant and many other ornamental grasses that do not need a lot of sunlight since they require little water and care. In case you cannot place the indoor gardening plants on the floor, you may consider placing them on the window sill so that they may have some sunlight to use in making their own food. Always remember that light is very essential for healthy growth of any plant hence ensure that your gardening plants have adequate access of sunlight. There are some exclusive and expensive gardening plants such as gladiolus and orchid which have special need for growth. Therefore, a beginner should start by planting the simple plants which are readily available at cheaper price. It is also important to know that there are various fertilizers for different gardening plants available in the market to provide them with vitamins and nourishment. When used correctly, these fertilizers ensure that the gardening plants grow and mature very fast in a healthy and admirable manner. Plants also die just like human being when neglected. However, this should not demoralize you to leave your gardening hobby. Remember that gardening plants require good care such as adequate watering as well as sufficient sunlight. Perennials For Sale

How to Make a Bird Feeder

The weather is turning colder and if you haven’t already noticed the birds are starting to take notice too. Birds and squirrels are starting to squirm everywhere looking and searching for food so that they can stock up for the winter months. One of the favorite things that a lot of kids and adults like to do is make bird feeders. Making bird feeders can be fun and enjoyable as well as adding quality time if you have kids that love arts and crafts.
There are many different ways to make bird feeders using just some common household items like milk cartons, soda bottle, glass bottles, glass jars and even things found outside such as pinecones can be easy and fun to use. Pinecone bird feeders are easy and can combine exercise in the mix as well! Many of us don’t live right where pinecones can be found, so why not take your kids or even yourself on a nature walk so that you can find some pinecones and make your birdfeeder?
Once you have found the pinecones of your choice, all you will need is some string or yarn, a plate, bird seed and peanut butter. Take your peanut butter and put it onto the plate, then take your pine cone and roll it through the peanut butter coating it well and then while it is still sticky you can sprinkle birdseed onto it. Lastly but not least tie the string or yarn onto the top of the pinecone and hang it from a tree. Not only are you recycling what we find in nature but as the birdseed is eaten off the pinecone returns to nature, the string can be used in helping aid with nesting and nothing is left outside that can’t be used by the birds or squirrels!
Make bird feeders can be fun and creative all at the same time. Using things like pine cone bird feeders allow you to make something that benefits everyone because it uses what you can already find in nature! Why not let your creative juices run and make some bird feeders that you can hang outside?

Nature Is Better For One's Mind Than Electronics

The world today is full of the wonders and great inventions of technology. These neat “toys” have helped our world in so many  and computers. However this also means that the younger generation are spending more and more time inside and are missing out on all the treasures that can be found in nature. Mother nature has provided us with an amazing playground and a vast library of knowledge that you just can not take advantage of if you are tethered to a video game all day.
A walk through a state park, on the seashore, or even just spending some time in your own backyard can open a whole new world to a young person. Nature is full of colors that only nature can produce, interesting plants, odd insects, and amazing creatures that you might not find in a zoo.
If you live near the coast take them on a shell hunt. Once you get the shells home you can not only investigate what types of shells they are, but these shells can serve as a great material in craft projects. They can be used to make jewelry or can be glued to decorate most any surface. Sea shells look great as a decoration on flower pots, jewelry boxes, or you can even turn them into creative Christmas ornaments.
The forest and wooded areas that are in your area can offer you and your children a great chance to spend a ton of quality time together. During this quality time and exploring what miracles of mother nature your child can gain a lot of information. One great great activity would be a leaf scavenger hunts. Provide each child with a photo of different species of leaves such as oak leaves, maple leaves, elm leaves, and other leaves. Once the scavenger hunt is over the leaves can be dried between two pieces of wax paper and your child can then make them into a book.
Another way to teach your child about nature is to allow them to plant a small garden or even just a few plants in planters. Let them choose foods that they enjoy such as watermelons, cucumbers, or corn. Not only will they learn a ton about plants, but they will learn responsibility and fill a sense of accomplishment when the whole family sits down and enjoys something that the child has grown from a seedling.

No matter how you get your child out from in front of the television and in nature the important thing is just doing it. Nature will not only teach them some great information, but also teach them to take a moment and admire the natural beauty that surrounds us all each day.

Prepping Can Be Done For Many Reasons

More and more people are getting into prepping, why? Prepping is a way to provide for yourself or your family in the event of a natural disaster, war or some other foreseen event. Prepping can be done in many different ways with a combination of an added extra expense each month or little expense each month. Prepping to many is classified as stock piling on guns, ammunition and war items but prepping can simply be done because you want to stock up in case the winter is bad. There are many reasons and ways to prep.

For many families using coupons each week to save on groceries or getting groceries for free is a great way for them to stockpile on groceries and prep for later use. Ladies, men, children and college students will spend hours on a weekly basis sitting cutting and clipping secular coupons, printing off online coupons and comparing multiple websites with multiple grocery stores in order to find the best deal. Coupons are being used all around the nation to save hundreds and thousands of dollars each year. People are saving 90-95% or more of their grocery bill using coupons. Coupons are very beneficial because they can be used to save money on groceries to allow you to spend money on other items such as ammunition if you are prepping, survival items or more staple items like soap, can goods or cooking supplies that you will need with every day cooking if the power should go out.

Growing your own fresh herbs or edible plants can also be a great way to prep and stock up on items that you need in case of an emergency. Edible plants can be found in many different varieties. The dandelion for example is edible and can be cooked up or eaten fresh on salads. The dandelion can also be used to help with aiding in stomach cramps, dizziness and headaches. Mustard salad can be eaten raw, cooked or ground into fresh mustard. Wild onions can be eaten cooked into food for added flavor or eaten raw. Strawberries, Bartlett Pear, Blueberries and Grapes all can be grown and made into jams, jellies, pies, preserves or stored fresh for future use as well as to provide with daily nutritional vitamins.

Prepping can be done many different ways, just by simply saving on groceries and spend the money somewhere else, stocking up when you can find good deals, canning and preserving or buying extra staple items as you can.

How to Plant a Garden

Planting, a successful garden, can be a very rewarding experience. Whether you are trying to grow plants, flowers or vegetables, purchasing seeds is the first step. Secondly, you would have to find a place in your yard that has constant sunshine at least six hours out of the day. There are also varieties of plants and flowers that will flourish in total shade.

Having soil that is rich in nutrients is very essential because it is much more than ordinary dirt. Soil can be tested in a number of ways, but the easiest and least expensive way is to buy a soil test kit at a local garden store. Preparing the soil is done by digging and mixing it up to about two feet down. On the back of the seed package, there should be instructions on how to plant them.

Watering the garden properly is a very important for its overall health. An over or under amount of water can be harmful so give it a thorough soaking during the morning hours every few days. Fertilizers that include nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium can be very beneficial to help the garden grow well. Following these procedures should allow you to enjoy your garden for years to come.

Easy Gardening

The most important "secret" for easy gardening is gaining invaluable information at your county agricultural center. Make a visit there a priority before you even start to plan your garden and grow huge garden plants .

The helpful staff can not only tell you what native plants would be recommended to make your gardening more successful, but they can also guide you as to the type of garden you should attempt if you are new at this project. They will advise on what soil and mulch you should use as well as what fertilizer, whether to plant what you choose in sunlight or shade, how much watering is needed plus a wide variety of other suggestions that will help you on your way to a desired outcome.

Once you have your garden planted, here are some interesting easy gardening ideas for the used coffee grinds and tea bags from your breakfast:
(1) Coffee grounds make for healthier plants such as roses and camellias.
(2) Coffee grounds help reduce garden pests.
(3) Tea bags can be buried whole or cut open and sprinkled onto the soil.
(4) Place tea bags intact on potted plants underneath the soil. This retains moisture and gives the plants energy.

How To Grow Gorgeous Garden Plants Cheap

When you have spent alot of good money on garden plants and you're worried about the fertilizer, care and up-keep of them it often makes you wonder is the beauty worth it. Think no more, I've got some excellent tips on how you can even recycle your coffee grounds, potato peelings and even old manure piles to make your garden plants beautiful and healthy without spending a dime.

We have an old chicken coop in our backyard. We use compost from it that is probably two decades old that we use as a filler for planting our garden plants. It's seasoned and doesn't have all the harmful ammonia that will kill garden plants as in fresh manure from the chicken coop does. We mix it in with or dirt and use to plant our garden plants and bedding annuals in and they flourish. Other methods as table scraps, potato peelings, and other manure that has aged is also a great way to rich-en up soil to make all your garden plants look absolutely excellent without paying one dime for expensive fertilizers and plant foods
.

When you put these compounds in your soil, mix it thoroughly into the existing soil you already have and then plant. Water your plants very well after planting and then daily for the first 4-5 days. You should have a lovely garden when spring time comes.

Nothing feels better or more rewarding than sitting in your garden, enjoying a cup of fresh cider or tea and admiring all the blooms and blossoms of your labor enjoying the hummingbirds, bees, and birds gathering around the beauty and feast while enjoying them.

Some Common Poisonous Garden Plants

Though often quite attractive, there are many common plants and flowers which are often used in gardens and landscaping… which are poisonous! While some poisonous plants give only relatively mild effects, such as headaches, others can induce seizures, or even kill you. Serious gardeners and landscapers are often encouraged to study handbooks of poisonous plants, so that they can easily recognize them when they see them. Children are especially at risk for consuming poisonous plants, and should be carefully monitored when in garden areas containing known poisonous plants.
