Spring's First Bloomers

Spring's First Blooming Plants

Spring is here, spring's earliest blooming flowering bushes and shrubs will be making even the earliest gardens look alive with color. Whether you are getting your landscaping way to make your garden bloom earlier in the year, or wanting to add a splash of color along borders and edges early in the year, azaleas, weigelias, and forsythias can make the impact you are looking for. The following will help you to determine what type of plant would be best for your needs and tell you a little more about each plant.

Azalea
This plant is known for its early bloom and vibrant colors. Usually seen in March or April, depending on location, these blooms are bright white, vibrant pink, hot red, or pastel pink. When it finishes blooming the shrub itself is quite attractive and has deep green leaves the rest of the year. The roots can be pretty fragile and require either a mix of sand or a slightly uphill place to stay properly drained.

Weigelia
These plants originate in the East in Korea and North China but were later imported to England, and eventually, the United States. and have many different types. They are very popular in shrub gardens and have beautiful five-fingered blossoms that are usually either white, pink, or red, but can rarely be seen in yellow. The Weigelia is a favorite in many landscaping schemes because of its early and long lasting blossom.

Forsythia
These plants are related to the olive tree, although they don't produce fruit. They do however produce a wild spray of bright yellow star shaped flowers. The exact hue ranges from a bright pale yellow to a deep golden rod yellow.
